Tugela Mouth

The Home of the Famous “Lebotes” (Tripletail)

Although they mostly frequent the Tugela Mouth area, we have caught some as far as Richards Bay.

The Lobotes are caught all year round but are particularly abundant from March to May after the river has come down in flood.ADULT LEBOTES

They have been seen entering the Tugela river estuary in large shoals, with some fishermen catching large numbers of these fish in a morning fishing session while the shoal is in a feeding frenzy.

The average size is 5kg. They are fairly abundant from July to October, often caught on live mullet while fishermen are fishing for Garrick.

Generally, the larger Lobotes are caught later in the year. Specimens of approximately 10kg have been recorded.

Common Names:

Black grunt, Black perch, Bouyfish, Conchy leaf, Dusky tripletail, Flasher, Sleepfish.

Order – Perciformes
Family – Lobotidae
Genus – Lobotes
Species – surinamensis
Distinctive Features:

Tripletails have small scales extending onto the dorsal, caudal and anal fins and a head profile which becomes more concave with age.

The tripletail has a compressed and deep body, with a triangular-shaped head. The eyes are relatively small, and its mouth is large.

The bases of both its dorsal and anal fins are scaled, and its pectoral fins are shorter than its pelvic fins.

The tripletail has distinctively large and rounded soft dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. This characteristic gave rise to the common name.

The juveniles are mottled with yellow, brown and black. Lying on its side at the water surface, a young tripletail looks like a floating mangrove leaf. The juveniles have white pectoral fins and a white margin on the caudal fin. Adult tripletails have varied mottled color patterns, ranging from dark brown to a reddish-brown or brown with a tint of gray.

The tripletail grows to 35 inches (89 cm) in length and a weight of 41 pounds (18.6 kg ). However, the average weight is between 2.2 and 15.4 pounds (1-7 kg). The tripletail grows fastest in its first year.

Other Species Targeted in this area are:

Shad, Salmon/Kob, Garrick (Leervis), Kingfish, Pompano, Springer, Stumpnose, Grunter, Skate, Stingray, Shark.

Definitely one of the most productive recreational angling spots on the KZN  North coast, whether it be shore or deep sea, bony or flatfish, resident or migrating fish, heavy or light tackle, bait feeders or game fish, Tugela is your spot.

At least 60 species are landed every year by anglers, ranging from the more abundant species like Kob, Shad, and Grunter to rare species such as Emperor Snapper, Jobfish, and Prodigal Son.GARMIN ETREX 10 GPS

The20km stretch of coastline between the Tugela and Amatikulu rivers has a unique combination of features attracting numerous marine species to the area.

  • Remoteness – Tugela is a small village that has escaped the attention of developers, giving you unspoiled nature in the true sense of the word.
  • The mouth of the “Mighty Tugela”, historically one of the biggest rivers in South Africa, is both breeding ground and nursery for “Baitfish” and hunting ground for game fish.LOBOTES
  • Flat sandy beaches and rocky outcrops, attracts crustacean feeders, most species of which prefers murky waters around river mouths.
  • Wall to wall reefs, stretching from backline (6m) to mud banks (45km).
  • The annual migration of Sardine, Mulletsand, Razor belly species attracting a host of game fish from the open sea.
  • Deep-Sea Angling is above average throughout the year. The abundance of reefs, yield good catches such as Rock Cod, Reds, Lantern fish, and “Mof” Grunters. Game fish, including “Cuda”, Dorado, King and Queenfish, and even sailfish are caught regularly.
  • Shad can be caught throughout the year, and swimming one is almost guaranteed to produce a tackle buster. Bring your own boat or charter ours – you will not be disappointed.
Shore Angling:
  • Shore Angling also produces above average results throughout the year. While different species are more abundant at different times you can expect results throughout the year.AIRIAL VIEW, LOBOTES AND TUGELA MOUTH
  • This is why Tugela is a popular venue for club competitions, attracting clubs from far and wide. Your options are varied, ranging from-light tackle in the river mouth to doing battle with a tackle buster who had picked up your live bait in the surf. Night fishing is very popular since it produces bigger fish.
  • Fly fishing is also gaining momentum in this area.
  • And then there are the Lobotes. Although the occasional individual is caught in the shallow estuarine waters of our coast, Tugela is the only place in South Africa where this magnificent fish is caught regularly.
  • Our park, ski boat club and the main street of our village were named after this awesome fish.
Fishing Calendar:

All year – Resident fish such as Rockcod, Lantern fish and Reds can be caught. Salmon (a collective name for various Kob species) are also abundant throughout the year.LOBOTES DEEP-SEA CHARTERS

Winter – The annual migration of pelagic fish (Sardine, Razorbelly, and Mullet) and game fish makes winter our peak fishing season.

It is peak season for Shad, Kob, Garrick and other species usually associated with colder waters (even Cape fish like Yellowtail and Geelbek).
Spring – Shad, and Garrick in abundance. You can also cash in on the yearly migration of Grunter.

The river mouth becomes particularly productive for smaller species of Kob, Stump nose, Perch and Kingfish, but many outsize “Daga Salmon” landed on live bait.
Summer – Tugela becomes the playground for sharks and game fish. King and Queen Mackerel, Wahoo, Bonito, Tunny and Dorado.
Autumn – February to May is Lobotes time for the shore angler and “Cuta” time for the deep-sea angler. This is also a productive time for Shad, Salmon and Rock Cod.

The Hatchery, Amatikulu

THE HATCHERYThe Hatchery is a Unique Accommodation and Wedding Venue in a deserted Prawn farm on a River mouth and Coastal Reserve on the North Coast.

Very Comfortable Rustic Accommodation in an Idyllic getaway setting.

Our comfortable, self-catering (catering on request) rooms are child and Pet-friendly.

History Lesson:

Way back when a civil engineer called Faan Myburgh got tired of city living and thought to balance his karma it would be better to become a prawn farmer.

To farm prawns, you have to live along the coast and so he thought thatCOMMUNAL KITCHEN taking into account salinity and water quality (we think it had more to do with the chilled out feeling he had whenever he visited the place) he decided that the amatikulu beach and lagoon would be best suited.

The elements are apparently in balance at amatikulu and definitely conducive to reproduction because the broodstock set about their task of spawning with gusto (we’ll spare you the details).

In no time the critters were flourishing and ready to be stocked into their larval rearing tanks(don’t ask us) where they were nourished daily with fresh algae cultured in UV treated water columns.

While not our personal choice the artemia (little furry creaturesSTARGAZER CAMP apparently) fed to them in the nursery seemed to do the trick and so well fed post-larvae were soon ready to be stocked into the prawn dams.

And so the prawn farm started and many lucky and relaxed prawns got to experience their own personal journey of discovery before being shipped off to end on a restaurant plate.

This carried on for a while until we decided the prawns shouldn’t be the ones having all the fun and the hatchery was born. Experience and enjoy it!

 Cape Vidal Resort

Cape Vidal lies within the Isimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site about 30 km North of the Town of St Lucia.

Cape Vidal offers the best of two worlds – it is situated on the exquisiteTHE BEACH Zululand coast with all its amazingly rich marine life, and it provides direct access to the Eastern Shores Nature Reserve with its populations of elephant, rhino, buffalo, crocodile, hippo, and reedbuck to name but a few.

The beach and off-shore areas at Cape Vidal fall within the St Lucia Marine Reserve which is visited seasonally by humpback whales during their migrations, as well as loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles that come to the beaches north of Cape Vidal from November to February to nest.

Other, marine “big game” includes the huge whale shark, marlin, sailfish, and dolphin.THE REEF

Cape Vidal lies on the edge of the St Lucia Marine Reserve which extends from 1 km south of Cape Vidal to the Mozambique border, and three nautical miles out to sea.

Six loop roads off the main St Lucia to Cape Vidal road provide excellent game viewing and bird watching.

Cape Vidal is the site of the wreck of the wooden Barque “Dorothea” which struck the reef during a storm in 1898.

Artifacts from the wreck may be seen in the bay at various times, and these include a massive piece of chain that lies on the reef, and a steel mast tube lying against the inner, shallow part of the reef.

The sheltered bay is a designated launch site for ski-boats and offers good rock and surf angling.

Saltwater Fly-fishing & Spinning is a popular pastime.

Cape Vidal Resort is set in a bay sheltered by a rock reef that is completely exposed at low spring

tides, providing a multitude of rock pools and prime snorkeling areas.

On either side lie kilometers of deserted, unspoiled beaches ideal for long walks, while inland there are self-guided drives around the fascinating wetlands and rich coastal forests.

There are 45 campsites in the dune forest near the beach.ABLUTIONS
